Matinée “Vorhang Auf!” – playing Major van Bett

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, I had the honor of performing in a matinee concert together with the Neeber-Schuler Choir under the direction of Helmut Bartel. The Frankfurt Haus der Chöre was full of energy as the choir opened the concert at 11 a.m.

As part of a varied and engaging program, I took on the role of Mayor van Bett. In the aria “O Sancta Justitia,” he first laments the great burden of his responsibility as a jurist and public official, before going on to praise his own brilliance.

In preparation for the ceremonial reception of the supposed “Kaiser aller Reussen” Peter Iwanow, van Bett rehearses “Den hohen Herrscher würdig zu empfangen.” Alongside several solo passages, he joins the choir in the piece “Heil sei dem Tag, an welchem du bei uns erschienen”. A play within the play!

Bringing this scene to life in a semi-staged performance together with such a large and passionate choir is something I will remember for a long time.
